The elite “Oxbridge” newcomers are hired on starting salaries up to 42 per cent higher than their “red brick” counterparts, a major report says.

Researchers also found that privately-educated youngsters are likely to earn £1,300 more in their first job than those from state schools.

The findings from the Sutton Trust educational charity come as David Cameron is under fire for picking a Cabinet run by ex-public school and Oxbridge Toffs.

Sutton Trust experts say their survey reveals inequality and demonstrates why youngsters from less-privileged backgrounds should be encouraged to apply for elite degrees.
