Thousands of poorer kids are missing out on the best primary education because of “socially selective” religious schools.

A Sutton Trust survey into 1,500 schools suggests they use complex entry rules which penalise disadvantaged pupils.

Chairman Sir Peter Lampl said: “Today’s findings warn us that primary school admissions are far from a level playing field.”

He said more had to be done to prevent parents “gaming the system”.
