Commenting on the OECD’s latest report, A Broken Social Elevator? How to Promote Social Mobility, Sir Peter Lampl, founder and chairman of the Sutton Trust, said:
“Our own research has highlighted how the UK’s poor social mobility is down to two factors: rising wage inequality and the relationship between family income and educational attainment. These depressing new findings should be a wake-up call for us to think radically about how to break the UK’s cycle of low social mobility.
“Amongst other things we need to find ways to attract and develop the best teachers to help those pupils most in need of support and look at ways to ensure that admissions to the best schools aren’t limited to those who can afford to live close by.”
