Last year, we spoke with Sarah about her participation with the Sutton Trust, and what she has been up to since – read on to hear about her experiences…

Tell us a little bit about your background…

“I grew up in a single-parent working class background and was the first in my family to go to university. I read for a degree in Experimental Psychology at the University of Oxford and later completed an MSc in Affective Disorders at King’s College London. I have spent my time working across different NHS mental health services, working with both adults and young people with a range of common mental health problems.”

How did you hear about the programme?

“I had heard about the Sutton Trust before from different school talks etc. I applied for both the UK and US summer school programmes.

Did you know what you wanted to do for a career before university?

“I knew I wanted to be a psychologist from age 15. The Sutton Trust programme allowed me to explore other options, however in the end I realised a liberal arts education was not the right fit because I knew exactly what I wanted to study and the route to my desired career!”

Can you tell us what you remember about your programme? What stands out?

“It was an absolute whirlwind and felt like a dream. I remember we all felt really fortunate and lucky. I think that was my actually first time on an airplane, or at least my first international flight! The cohort was so special, and although it has been 10 years (where does time go?), I am still connected with a few people via social media and LinkedIn.”

Any other reflections or memories you’d like to share?

“It was a fantastic opportunity for so many reasons, I think everyone from my cohort gained something, even if they did not end up studying abroad, we all at the very least had an unforgettable summer in the US!”
