The precise source of the maxim that not everything that counts can be counted is disputed. It is sometimes attributed to Albert Einstein but that doesn’t need to be the case to make it true. So much that counts as education arises out of school. Bearing, cultural knowledge and being socially adept are all skills prized by employers. There is good evidence, too, that these intangible traits are more likely to be prevalent among the children of wealthy, well-connected parents than their poorer counterparts.

The Sutton Trust has a wealth of evidence to show that pupils from less-privileged backgrounds are less likely to gain places at the best universities, even when their grades are identical to their wealthier counterparts.
