White working-class boys from poor neighbourhoods face a “double disadvantage” – making them far less likely to continue studying after their GCSEs, a report reveals.

Living in a deprived area and having low family incomes means fewer than a third of these boys will go on to take AS levels, A levels or other qualifications.

That compares to just under half of working class white boys from more affluent areas and two thirds of boys from wealthier families.

The Sutton Trust report found boys were significantly less likely to carry on with academic study than girls.
