Following another successful summer of programme delivery, today the Sutton Trust has published its first Student Destinations report, demonstrating the impact that our programmes have had between 2006 and 2016.
Over these ten years, just under 16,000 young people took part in one of our three flagship programmes: UK Summer Schools, US Programme, and Pathways to Law. Each year we work with leading universities and organisations to support young people to explore university and their future options, provide them with the tools needed to navigate higher education and teach them to aim high.
“The Sutton Trust makes such a huge difference to the lives of people like me, whose backgrounds don’t necessarily mean that they would aim as high as they could otherwise” – Natasha Holcroft-Emmess (UKSS, 2008).
Our report compares our alumni with groups of students with similar grades and backgrounds and shows that across our flagship programmes, an estimated 7000 young people enrolled at a top university after completing a Sutton Trust programme than otherwise would have.
UK Summer Schools
Between 2006 and 2016, 13,119 young people took part in our UK Summer Schools. Compared to their classmates with similar grades and backgrounds, these students were four times more likely to apply to a top university, four times more likely to receive an offer from a top university, and four and a half times more likely to accept the offer.
Pathways to Law
Over 2000 young people took part in Pathways to Law between 2006 and 2016. Compared to their classmates, these students were three and a half times more likely to apply to a top university and receive an offer, and four times more likely to accept an offer. 66% of those who progressed to university have studied or are currently studying law, and 52% attend a Russell Group university.
US Programme
673 young people took part in our US Programme between 2010 and 2016. 40% won places at top US universities, 30% accepted a place at a Russell Group university, and 5% accepted a place at Oxbridge. Compared to their classmates with similar grades and backgrounds, these students were six times more likely to apply to a top UK university and four and a half times more likely to receive an offer from a top UK university.
The Trust aims to build on this success in years to come and continue to raise the aspirations of the next generation of young people.
